An upcoming revision to the Apple TV will integrate a microphone directly into the set-top box and add a speaker to its remote control, expanding hands-free Siri access and enabling the media player to operate as an ambient smart home hub. The Verge reports that the hardware overhaul is intended to make interacting with Apple’s virtual assistant faster while resolving the common problem of misplaced remotes.

The central hardware modification places a microphone inside the Apple TV console. Under current configurations, issuing voice commands to Siri requires users to speak into the handheld remote control or route their speech through a connected HomePod speaker. Placing the microphone hardware directly on the set-top box lets owners operate the streaming unit from across the room without speaking into the remote or relying on a standalone smart speaker.

The embedded microphone also permits the Apple TV to serve as a simple hub for smart home automation. With direct voice pickup, users can instruct Siri to adjust thermostats and lock doors without first tracking down the physical remote. The set-top box processes those domestic controls directly, removing the need for a separate handheld device when issuing routine commands to household appliances and entryway locks.

To address missing controllers, the upgraded remote will include an integrated speaker intended to help users pinpoint its location. Misplaced remotes can emit an audio alert, signaling their position if kicked underneath living room furniture or hidden away inside a drawer. The sound provides a direct acoustic trail so owners do not need to hunt through the room to resume navigating their television.

Internally, the revised Apple TV will run on Apple’s A19 processor. The A19 chip is designated to power Siri AI functions across the device, pairing the console’s new microphone with updated computing hardware to handle automated tasks, system navigation, and connected device requests.

The updated Apple TV is expected to begin shipping on October 30. That target date aligns the launch with the arrival of a refreshed HomePod mini, placing both devices together on Apple’s release schedule following the company’s “Welcome Home” showcase event.

The reported features remain unconfirmed rumors ahead of any official product unveiling. Apple has not formally verified the October 30 shipping timeline, the A19 chip upgrade, or the physical additions to the Apple TV and its remote control. Until the hardware appears at the “Welcome Home” event, the exact capabilities of the onboard microphone, the remote speaker, and the refreshed HomePod mini remain subject to official announcement.
