Byte Journal gets things wrong sometimes. When that happens the error is corrected on the article itself, with a note saying what was wrong — not silently removed.

Reporting an error

Send the article link, what you believe is wrong, and — if you have one — the source that shows the correct position. Corrections are for matters of fact: names, numbers, dates, versions, prices, attributions, and claims that cannot be supported.

The public address for corrections is:

[email protected] — a real mailbox that is read. You do not need to subscribe to anything to use it.

You can also reply to any newsletter email if you already receive it.

What happens next

  1. The claim is checked against the article’s own cited sources and any source you send.
  2. If the article is wrong, it is corrected and a dated correction note is added to the bottom of the article.
  3. If a substantive change is needed but nothing was actually wrong — a new development, an added confirmation, a clarification — the article carries a dated update note instead.
  4. If the article is right, the reasoning is sent back to you.

Corrections are published even when they are unflattering, and a corrected article is never re-dated to hide that it changed. The original publication date stays; the correction note carries its own date and time.

What is not a correction

  • Disagreement with a source’s own position, where Byte Journal has reported it accurately and attributed it.
  • A change in the underlying facts since publication (a price changes, a bug is fixed). That is an update, and it gets an update note.
  • Typos and formatting, unless they change the meaning. Those are fixed without a note.

Corrections to sourced material

News briefs summarise reporting by other outlets and link to it. If the upstream reporting is corrected, Byte Journal aims to follow it — a correction that reaches us that way is applied the same as one sent by a reader.
