Cloudflare has opened the closed beta of its Monetization Gateway, a system designed to let websites and developers charge AI agents for access to online resources through automated payments.

Announced on September 30, 2026, the release expands on Cloudflare’s initial July announcement. Cloudflare said four implementations were already running in production, but the broader service remains in closed beta.

The technology uses the x402 payment protocol, which is designed to let compatible AI agents pay for individual requests without traditional checkout pages, subscriptions, or prepaid accounts. Adoption is not automatic: both the agent and the resource provider must support the relevant payment flow.

Four Confirmed Implementations

Cloudflare identified four production implementations associated with the beta:

Cloudflare AI Gateway supports payments for selected AI inference requests, allowing eligible customers to pay when accessing supported models.

Ceramic.ai uses the gateway to charge for searches performed through its web search API.

Stocktwits offers paid access to market signals through an endpoint designed for AI agents.

API2PDF uses the gateway to charge for PDF generation based on the resources consumed by individual requests.

These examples confirm several current applications, including AI inference, search, financial data, and document processing. They do not establish that the gateway is broadly available for every type of website or API.

How the Payment System Works

The gateway relies on HTTP 402, a status code associated with situations where payment is required.

When a compatible AI agent requests a protected resource, the gateway can return payment instructions. The agent may then authorize the transaction, and the resource can become accessible after payment is verified and settled.

Payments currently use USDC on the Base blockchain, with Coinbase’s x402 Facilitator supporting verification and settlement. This means participants must account for blockchain-based payments, including compatibility, operational, and regulatory considerations. The system is not a conventional card or bank-payment checkout.

Cloudflare allows sellers to configure fixed or variable pricing, with prices starting at $0.001. A listed price does not guarantee that a provider will generate meaningful revenue; earnings will depend on request volume, agent adoption, pricing, costs, and successful settlement.

Potential Uses for Website Owners

AI agents may become another audience for websites and online services. Unlike traditional visitors, they can retrieve information and interact with APIs automatically.

The gateway could allow developers to monetize those interactions directly. For example, a website owner might charge for access to a specialized dataset, while an API provider might collect payment for each agent-initiated request.

These are potential use cases rather than guarantees of future demand. AI agents must support the payment protocol, users or developers must authorize spending, and the requested resource must be valuable enough to justify payment.

Availability Remains Limited

The Monetization Gateway is currently available through a closed beta for eligible U.S.-based buyers and sellers. Eligibility and access may limit participation during this phase.

Cloudflare says additional geographic support is planned, but it has not announced a general availability date.

For now, the beta provides a limited, early example of AI agents paying directly for digital resources and services. Wider adoption will depend on integration by agent developers and publishers, user willingness to pay, support for USDC and Base, and whether transaction revenue outweighs implementation and payment-related costs.
